So when should I take the IELTS?

Summary: Are you wondering when to embark on the IELTS journey? You are not alone. The answer may not be as simple as it seems.

Are you wondering when to embark on the IELTS journey? You are not alone. Many of my students find themselves pondering this crucial question. And if you are reading this, there is a good chance you are wondering the same thing.

Significance of IELTS

We know that IELTS is the world's most widely recognized English proficiency exam. IELTS is accepted by more than 11,500 organizations in over 140 countries. Your score on the IELTS can open doors to educational opportunities, enhance your professional growth, and lead to international relocation. Also, your score is valid for two years, so keep this in mind when planning.

But Jenn, when do I take it?
Consider this your warning, as I have an unpopular POV (point of view): take the exam only when you are ready.
What does that mean?
Well, let’s look at some considerations.

What are your goals?

You need to know what your end goal is for taking IELTS. Your goals will shape your IELTS journey. Are you looking to immigrate to a new country, are you hoping to be accepted at a certain university or apprenticeship program, or do you need it for a new job at an international company? These factors will play into when you need to take the exam and how to plan for your success.

Plan your success

Success on the IELTS exam requires planning. Yes, you will need a plan. Merely registering for the exam will not cut it. Preparation is key. That means you will need to study for the exam. People who try to take the exam without any preparation tend to fail to achieve their goals. The same goes for those who take the exam repeatedly and fail. Yet, they somehow expect a different result the next time they take the exam. Additionally, those who register for the exam without knowing their score will tend to fall short of their goal.

Know your score

Yes, you read that correctly. Know your score before the exam. One often overlooked aspect of preparation is understanding your current level of proficiency and understanding of the exam. You need to plan your preparation and take several practice exams under exam conditions. However, this does NOT mean the only preparation you do are practice tests over and over. You will need to invest in yourself to achieve your desired score.

Invest in yourself

Success on the IELTS involves holistic growth in your language proficiency and test-taking strategies. You must invest time in enhancing both. Investing in a qualified IELTS teacher or quality study materials can make a significant difference. This comprehensive approach ensures that you are not just prepared, but also confident when you face the actual exam. Knowing your score before the exam day can save you time, money, and invaluable resources.

On your terms

The best time to take the IELTS is when you are fully prepared, both academically and mentally. Try not to give in to external pressures, whether from family or looming deadlines. Your IELTS journey is a personal one, and it's crucial to do it on your own terms. It takes time to develop not only your language skills but also strengthen your mindset for IELTS. How long? I can’t say, as everyone is at a different level of English when they embark on this challenge. Understand that IELTS is not just an end of something but rather a beginning, marking the start of a new chapter in your life.

Therefore, the ideal time to take the IELTS is when you are equipped with the knowledge, the confidence, and a well-defined strategy. It's not merely an examination it’s a stepping stone toward a brighter future. Your success on the IELTS is not just a testament to your language proficiency; it’s proof of your determination and preparedness for the world that lies ahead.
